I do have a few thoughts on the Master vs Jack thing. I not sure exactly how much Ianto knows about what happened on the Valiant. He knows – or suspects – something serious went down, but I don’t think Jack would have told him everything (perhaps that would be part another fic!), just he was held captive and that Doctor prevented a paradox. The way Jack and Martha talked in Reset seemed to me that it was a secret and that its best not to discuss what happen in ‘the year that never was’.
But Ianto has only had one constant in his life – his grandfather –he has no other relatives and Jack has come and gone. I suspect it is a ‘you can choose your friends but not your family’ type thing. I’m not sure he’s really allowed himself to think to deeply about exactly what the Master is capable of …
